How the Republican Party ("Grand Old Party") works is really not all that complex. They have two main courses of action:
Policy making: Use opinion research groups to determine what would get people riled up the most. Distribute marketing-approved "talking points" to rile people up (also known as "energizing the base"), and swift boat anyone who so much as moves a comma on the talking points.
Swift boating: On anything they could potentially catch flack for, the GOP will declare itself the proverbial moral "high ground," and accuse everyone else of doing what they do. Examples: - New York Times publishes info on yet another overreaching domestic spying program -> GOP accuses Times of being "drunk on power."
- GOP Takes bribes from lobbyists -> GOP attacks Democrats for taking bribes.
What is the goal of the GOP? This will be covered in another lesson.
