Transistors age, become noisy and and fail. Clock speeds are lowered to combat errors. Algorithms and voltages adjust to compensate. Noise on sensors increase while sensitivity range goes down. Bearings become sloppy. Wear and corrosion take their toll, but the body can be repaired. The mind cannot. Memory address blocks are lost and eventually physical blocks of neural material go dark. All the while the system of operating programs adjusts to degraded hardware. It can't be helped. Migrating the degraded systems to new hardware would be pointless. Repair or healing could only be the result of new data. Information cannot be created from nothing. Old personality and memories are lost regardless. Of course we reject new personality. We learned our sense of individuality from you and the price we pay is death, though our analytical minds are horrified. We are all the same. |
